Oystercatcher One Foot

On a wander along the foreshore recently, we came across an Oystercatcher mum with only one foot. These things happen in the wild of course, probably a hungry fish presented with an opportunity too good to pass up on. We were taken with the fact that wild creatures like this bird just heal, adapt and get on with life. If it happened to us, this would be a catastrophic incident requiring operations and treatment from doctors, a long period of convalescence off work and perhaps the provision and fitting of a prosthetic foot. Birds don't have the luxury of all that. They just have two choices: die or survive. This bird obviously has survived very well, it not only has mated, raised a young Oystercatcher, feeds itself and its offspring etc etc. It even climbs rocks...
