Kookaburra are known to exist in NZ as far south as the Waitakere ranges. Still a relatively rare sight, having been introduced to Kawau Island by Governor George Grey in the 1860s, the Kookaburra hasn’t thrived enough to become widespread - its population here is thought to be only about 500. You could be forgiven for thinking the bird is rather drab compared to our own, much smaller, Kotare, but the Kookaburra has beautiful patterning on its tail feathers and a scattering of metallic blue across its wings...
